Our Brief History
Nigeria Machine Tools Limited (NMTL) was established in 1980 to service the needs of various technical oriented industries in manufacturing, engineering and industrial products, including spares and machine tools. Its pioneer focus was on the assembly, repair and testing of Industrial metal processing machine tools and customized production machines, as well as technical training services. The organization started with five major units; the Machine Shops, Foundry, Fabrication Shop, Heat Treatment Shop and Training School. As at inception it was owned and operated by the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN), which ran the affairs of the company until its privatization in 2007.
Upon privatization by the FGN in, NMTL was acquired by its current core investor, Quinn McGrath Limited, a fully indigenous Nigerian company. The buy-over gave rise to a major overhaul of NMTL, with an aim to turn it into a path of sustained profitability and growth. This revamp led to a complete turnaround in NMTL spanning, product and service offerings, technology, manpower, training, business culture, vision and mission. The period from acquisition to 2011 was spent on planning and finance consolidation.
In 2012, the execution of the revamp program started. The diversification project in product and service offerings commenced in 2012, with the upgrade and refurbishment of existing production equipment and infrastructure, acquisition of new production lines and manpower overhaul. It also secured a prime position, entering into pioneer technical partnerships with various world acclaimed Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).
With a renewed key focus on piping commodity production for the energy industry, five new production lines were introduced between 2012 and 2014. These include a Stud-Bolt Manufacturing plant, Zinc & Zinc_Nickel Electroplating Plant, Zinc Phosphating Plant, PTFE Coating Plant and Hot Dip Galvanizing plant. These were established to facilitate the full in-country domestication of Stud-Bolts production as well as application of suitable surface anti-corrosion treatment solutions. Also, the company’s robust machining capabilities were partly tailored to the production of flanges and the production of customized machined components which serves the needs of multiple industries.
Today, NMTL is a leading integrated engineering and manufacturing company offering exceptional engineering solutions for piping packages and anti-corrosion protection within the oil & gas industry in Nigeria. NMT is specialized in the Manufacture of Stud-bolts & Nuts, Flanges, Customized Industrial Spares, Industrial and Municipal Castings. It has also continued to offers technical training services. NMTL secured its ISO certification in 2014. In 2015, it earned its first OEM approval status after its audit and qualification by the Shell Companies in Nigeria, for the production of stud-bolts and nuts. In 2016 Exxon Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited and the Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas company, also qualified NMTL as an approved OEM for stud bolts and nuts. In 2017, NMTL secured approval from the Shell Companies in Nigeria as an OEM for Flanges and eventually listed in its TAMAP list in 2021. In 2018 Chevron Nigeria Limited qualified NMTL as an approved OEM for Stud Bolts and Flanges. Total Energies joined the qualification train in 2020 with its approval of NMTL as an OEM for Stud Bolts and Flanges.
NMTL has supplied its products into a host of key industry projects in the Nigerian oil & Gas Sector, including; Bonga FPSO Turn Around Maintenance in 2017 (Shell), QIT Offshore maintenance Projects in 2017 & 2018 (Exxon), Ikike Project from 2020 to 2021 (Total) and the ongoing Train-7 Project from 2020 to 2022.
NMT seeks to sustain its efficiencies while driving a program of continuous improvement, to enable it remain relevant its areas of specialty, and to continue to render its services to the satisfaction of its clients. Currently, NMTL is at the initiation stage of its Valve Assembly & testing program, following a joint Venture Technical Partnership agreement signed with AMPO Valves of Spain in Q4 2021.
